Grey Squirrel: UK Status: Resident Distribution: This species was introduced to Britain from the USA, between 1876 to 1929. Since then this squirrel has become firmly established in the UK, and is wide spread. It is found mainly in England, Wales, central Scotland, and the eastern half of Ireland. Body Length: Including the tail the length of this squirrel is 42cm to 52cm. Habitat: This species inhabits area with suitable deciduous trees to support a drey, and provide the types of food that it requires. It is often seen in Parks, Gardens, woodland and Hedgerows. Food Source: Small nuts such as Acorns, Horse and Sweet Chestnuts. They can be a pest on bird feeders in the garden, often pinching the peanuts and kernels intended for the birds. Special precautions need to be taken to stop these agile little acrobats, from taking from the bird feeders. They are quick thinkers, and good at puzzle solving, they usuall work out how to get the nuts eventually. Similar Species: None |
