Chiloe Wigeon:
UK Status: Non resident, though this duck can
be found in wildlife parks, and rare bird breeding centres. This duck is
indigenous to South America, including the Chiloe Archipelago.
Habitat:
This bird prefers inland habitats such as lakes, marshes, shallow
lagoons and slow moving rivers.
Breeding:
Breeding is mainly in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, and breeds sparingly
in the Falkland Isles. These ducks form monogomous pairs, and have very
small breeding territories. Nests are built amongst tall grasses,
sometimes under bushes, nest are made from local vegetation. Breeding
takes place during the Austral spring, between September to December.
Eight to ten cream coloured eggs are laid, and they take about three and
a half weeks to hatch, the father helps raising the young until the off
spring moult.
Comment:
These ducks migrate to south eastern Brazil for the winter months.
