European Green Finch:

UK Status: Resident and native.

Habitat: This is a bird mainly of shrubby gardens, parks and quiter hedge lined roads and lanes.

Breeding: Nests are built in very dense hedgerows, but shrubs and trees will sometimes be used if thick enough. Nests are made from about mid March to early April, and consist of twigs, grass and straw, the inner cup being lined with moss. Usually four to five eggs are laid, though occasionally there can be up to seven in a clutch. The eggs range from pale buff, to greyish, or bluish white, and are sometimes splotched, or spotted with darker markings. There are two broods each year, they don't usually return annually to the same nest, but will often return to the same vicinity.

Comment: This lovely finch is well distributed throughout the British Isles, but is getting scarcer. Having declined in numbers during the seventies, the population recovered some what in the ninety's. This species is now in decline again, a parasite called trichomonosis is thought to be the cause.
