Himalayan Monal Pheasant:  

UK Status: Native to Asia, but also found in the UK in wildlife parks and zoo's.

Habitat: This bird inhabits upland Oak and Pine forests with open grassy slopes and Alpine type meadows.. They feed on nuts, tubers, leaves, tender young shoots, insects and various invertebrates.

Breeding: Nesting only on the ground in a shallow scrape, or in suitable rock crevices. Three to five eggs are laid, and are brown in colour with darker blotches, streaks and flecks, and they hatch in about four weeks. Chicks are precocial, and can walk and forage for food themselves shortly after hatching. Adult birds are monogamus, and pair for life.

Comment: This quite common bird has a range of distribution from Afghanistan and Pakistan through the Himalaya range to India, Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. In India this bird is known as just a Monal.
