Habitat: This bird is found in the mountainous regions of Western China. They inhabit the edges of forests and woodland, often near to human populations. These pheasants feed on grain, leaves and invertebrates, and although ground feeders, they roost in trees at night. Their flight is laboured and clumsy, as such they prefer to run and hide from predators.

Breeding: Nests are a shallow scrape on the ground, lined the dried grasses and leaves. Eight to twelve eggs are laid in each clutch, the eggs are of a light buff colouration. Nest are placed under cover, usually a bush, to protect the incubating female from bad weather and predators. Eggs take two to two and a half weeks to hatch, the chicks then grow and develop rapidly.

Comment: This bird is also known as the Rainbow Pheasant and the Chinese Pheasant. There are populations of this pheasant in many other parts of the world, introduced by humans.
