Blue-eyed Black Lemur:

UK Status: Non resident, it is native of Madagascar, some can be seen in zoos all over world.

Habitat: This Lemur inhabits both primary and secondary sub tropical moist, and dry rain forest. It is to be found in these forests in the north western tip of Madagascar. It's range is Andranomalaza River through to Maevarano River in the south.

Breeding: There is not a lot known about their breeding habits, except that they are very social and hang around in social groups. They feed mainly on various fruits, and occasional insects. Like us they only digest the flesh of various fruits, shedding the seeds over wide tracks of forests, in with a nice fertiliser of faeces. Many new trees and shrubs are propagated as a result.

Comment: The Blue-eyed Black Lemur takes it's name from the male of the species. He is black in colour, with big vivid blue eyes, females also have blue eyes. Blueness of the eyes varies from soft grey blue to sky blue, and even a shocking electric blue. The day I photographed the female above, unfortunately the male was a bit coy, very shy. These true lemurs are also known as Sclater's Lemur, there blue eyes differentiate them from the Black Lemur.
