UK Status: Resident & native. Distribution: Common, through out most of the British Isles. Females live much longer than the smaller males. Male Body Length: 5.5mm to 13mm Female Body Length: 6.5mm to 20mm. Habitat: To be found in many types of habitat including, Parks, Gardens, Hedgerows, Marshes and Woodland. This species and is very variable in colour, ranging from straw brown, or golden yellow, through to dark brown, or blackish. Markings are also quite variable. Food Source: Most small insects including, wasps, bees, moths, flies etc. |
