Cowslip:

UK Status: Resident and native.

Appx Height: 15cm up to 30cm.

Flowering: Period: Between late March, until the end of May, or early June.

Habitat: This cheerful looking plant grows on grassland, including grass verges, and is sometimes found in more open woodland areas. It is a type of spring flowering Primula, with broad toothed, green wrinkled leaves, that are narrow towards the tips. It can be quite common in some places, and is very similar to the much paler coloured, and rarer Oxlip plant. In the olden days Cowslip was traditionally used as a sedative for insomniacs, and in Spain it's leaves are used as a salad green.

Comment: In the British Isles it is widely distributed throughout the mainland and Isles. In places it can be quite common, and scarce, or absent in others.
