Oak & Northern Eggar ssp

There are two distinct forms of the Oak and Northern Eggar, Lasiocampa quercus, Lasiocampa quercus callunae are both sub species of the same moth. The northern ssp takes two years to become an adult, where as the Oak Eggar only takes one year. Northern Eggar's inhabit moorland, and feed on low growing plants inc heathers. Oak Eggar's feed on trees, shrubs and heathers.

Status: Resident in UK.

Wing Span: 48mm to 72mm.

Flight Period: May and June, the males often flying by day.

Habitat: It inhabits open wood land, down land, heaths, moorland, hills and waste ground.

Comment: This is one of our largest resident moths, and is well distributed, and fairly common through out most of the British Isles.

Status: Resident in UK.

Wing Span: 58mm to 90mm.

Flight Period: May into July.

Habitat: It inhabits open wood land, heath land and moor lands.

Comment: This moth is a local and wide spread resident throughout the UK.

Status: Resident in UK.

Wing Span: 50mm to 70mm.

Flight Period: June until August.

Habitat: Found on woodland rides, commons, fenland, damp heaths, the marshes, and wetter parts moor lands.

Comment: This moth is common and wide spread throughout England and Wales. Wide spread, but Scarcer in Scotland and Ireland.

Status: Resident in UK.

Wing Span: 55mm to 85mm.

Flight Period: April and May.

Habitat: Found in open wood land, down land, heaths and moor land.

Comment: This species is a resident, and is widely distributed, and is locally common through out the British Isles. Specimens from Scotland, especially the female are more brightly coloured than those from the south.
