Nicobar Pigeon:

UK Status: Non resident, introduced to zoos and parks.

Habitat: This bird is found on the Andaman and Nicobar islands, India, east through the Indonesian Archipelago, through to the Solomon Islands and Palau. Very occasional vagrants turn up in Australia, this pigeon feeds on seeds, fruits and buds.

Breeding: Nesting only on island forests, the adults build the familiar flimsy dove type nes of sticks and twigs. One White, faintly blue tinged elliptical egg is laid per clutch. The long term survival of this species is in jeopardy, in part to it's ever shrinking habitat, and hunting.

Comment: This species is the only living relative of the Caloenas genus, this genus includes the extinct Spotted Green and Kanaka Pigeons, and is the closest relative to the extinct Dodo and Rodrigues Solitaire.
